On the heels of relocating to an expansive new home after 75 years, Temple Israel in West Palm Beach has announced its new executive director: David Schimmel, an established leader with more than three decades of senior leadership experience who has built a national reputation for strategic leadership, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to strengthening Jewish communities.
This appointment ushers in a new chapter of leadership for the historic congregation at a pivotal moment in its history, as it continues to experience strong growth under the leadership of its clergy, Rabbi Ryan Daniels and Rabbi Carlie Daniels.
A native Floridian, Schimmel most recently served as executive director of Chizuk Amuno Congregation and Schools in Baltimore, where he led operations for a $14.5 million multi-faceted organization serving more than 900 member families and 500 students. In that role, he oversaw strategic and operational leadership across finance, human resources, facilities, and governance while partnering closely with clergy, lay leaders, and staff to support a thriving synagogue, school, and camp community.
“David brings the rare combination of strategic insight, operational expertise, and a genuine passion for Jewish communal life,” said Cindy McDonald, Temple Israel Board president. “As our congregation enters this exciting new chapter in our new home, we are confident that his leadership will help guide Temple Israel’s continued growth while deepening the sense of connection and community that defines who we are.”
“Temple Israel is clearly in an extraordinary moment,” said Schimmel. “With inspiring clergy leadership, a growing congregation, and a new synagogue home, the foundation for the future is incredibly strong. I’m honored to join this vibrant community and look forward to building meaningful relationships with our members and the broader community as we help the congregation and Jewish Palm Beach continue to flourish.”
Temple Israel’s leadership noted that, beyond his professional accomplishments, Schimmel stood out during the search process for his leadership philosophy rooted in Jewish values, transparency, collaborative governance, and investing in people. His roots in Florida also provide a strong foundation and understanding of the Palm Beach Jewish community.
