The ROI On Love

“You buy cheap, you pay dearly.”~~French Proverb

There comes a point in life when we stop asking about the cost of goods and services and begin asking a more efficient question: “What is the cost of me not moving forward?”Common sense tells us that there is a cost of being cheap. Buying low-quality items or services or avoiding reasonable expenses always ends up costing us more money, time, and frustration later.

Welcome Fall 2026 … this is the time of year when we should take a serious inventory of the months prior. Review investment portfolios, meet with our advisors, and business owners move into the last quarter of the year. It is the time that we carefully consider the return on every dollar we have spent. However, and more importantly, how often do we evaluate the return on the quality of life or our love life?

At Revolution Dating, we meet successful people every day who have mastered investing. They’ve built businesses, purchased homes, accumulated generational wealth, and created remarkable portfolios. Yet many admit to us the day they join our club that they have postponed investing in the one area that affects every other part of life: meaningful relationships. There’s a moment in almost every enrollment where they say out loud: “I wish I did this years ago.” They have learned that money is an incredible tool, but it was never meant to dominate their existence. If you or someone you know sacrifices themselves while trying to coupon their way through life and relationships, please pass this article on.

Recently, a survey found that 70% of Americans recognize there’s a significant difference between being frugal and being cheap. Frugality is viewed as responsible and attractive. Penny-pinching, on the other hand, often comes at the expense of experiences, generosity, and connection. In fact, the New York Post says 61% of people say financial responsibility is an attractive quality in a partner—but they also distinguish thoughtful spending from simply refusing to invest in life’s meaningful moments (i.e., relationship investments).

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with finding your best deal or being financially disciplined. In fact, we admire it. But there is a difference between protecting your finances and protecting yourself so much that you stop living altogether. When was the last time you invested in yourself–not your house, not your retirement account, not your golf clubs, but your future happiness? How much is another year of loneliness worth? How many birthdays, weddings, holidays, and Sunday mornings are you willing to spend saying: “I’ll do it next weekend.”

Time is the one asset that none of us can earn back. Interestingly, relationship researchers at NYU have discovered something else. Couples aren’t happier simply because they have more money. They tend to be happier when they see money as a way to create freedom, meaningful experiences, and a fulfilling life together—not merely something to accumulate. The goal isn’t to die with the largest bank account but to build the richest life possible. We would argue that finding someone to share those experiences with may be one of the greatest investments of all. That’s why we often ask our clients to shift their thinking.

Don’t ask: “Can I afford matchmaking?”

Ask: “Can I afford another year of flying solo?”

At Revolution Dating, we don’t see ourselves as a dating service. We see ourselves as partners in helping people build extraordinary lives. We insure our homes. We hire financial planners. We work with personal trainers, physicians, attorneys, and business consultants because we understand the value of expert guidance. So why should love—the relationship that influences our health, happiness, longevity, and daily joy—be the one area where we’re expected to figure it out alone?

As we welcome the beautiful fall season, also known as cuffing season, it’s time to stop measuring life in dollars and start measuring it in moments. Dinner conversations, weekend getaways, holding hands during a walk, and creating memories. One day, no one will remember the balance in your bank account. They’ll remember how you lived and how you made other people feel when they were around you. They’ll remember who you loved and how you loved. This fall, don’t just protect your wealth. Invest in your happiness, and invest in yourself. The ROI will be greater than anything Wall Street could ever offer.
