If You Could Do One Thing Without Glasses, What Would It Be?
By Jason Gorscak, MD
Before we talk about measurements, prescriptions, or lens technology, I often start with a simple question: If you could do one thing without glasses, what would it be?
Interestingly, most patients don’t stop at one thing.
They want to read without reaching for readers. They want to drive more comfortably at night. They want to travel without carrying multiple pairs of glasses. They want to spend time on the golf course, work on a computer more comfortably, or simply wake up and see the room clearly. The answer usually leads to a much bigger conversation.
Most patients come to See Vision because something about their vision is no longer working the way they would like. They may be struggling with reading, driving, glare, or an increasing dependence on glasses. While improving visual clarity is always important, we spend just as much time discussing how those challenges affect daily life. Understanding a patient’s goals helps us create a vision plan that is focused not only on how they see, but also on how they live.
A frequent traveler may have different priorities than an avid reader. A golfer may have different visual goals than someone who spends hours each day in front of a computer. A night driver may have concerns that are entirely different from someone who rarely drives after dark. No two patients are exactly alike, which is why a personalized approach is so important.
Today’s cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange procedures offer options that were not available years ago. When we remove the eye’s natural lens, we are not simply addressing a cataract or correcting a vision problem. We are also discussing how a patient wants to see moving forward.
Advanced lens technologies give us more choices than ever before. The key is selecting the option that best matches each patient’s eyes, daily activities, and goals for life after surgery. That personalized approach helps us create a vision plan designed around the individual, not a one-size-fits-all solution.
That philosophy is one of the reasons we created our Office Procedure Center (OPC). We wanted an environment designed specifically around vision correction, where patients experience continuity throughout their journey. From consultation and planning to surgery and recovery, our goal is for patients to be cared for by a team that understands not only their eyes, but also the vision goals that matter most to them. The OPC allows us to combine advanced technology with a personalized experience in a setting dedicated exclusively to vision correction.
What I’ve learned over the years is that successful vision correction is about more than improving sight. It is about understanding what patients hope to gain from that improvement. For some, it is convenience. For others, it is confidence. For many, it is the freedom to spend less time thinking about their glasses and more time enjoying the activities they love.
The most important conversation we have is not about a prescription, a measurement, or even a particular lens. It begins with understanding a patient’s goals, priorities, and lifestyle. When we understand how someone wants to live, we can help them better understand what may be possible for their vision.
