Article 4: Why Life Insurance Matters After Buying a Home
In the prior article, we discussed updating your estate plan after purchasing a home. Another important consideration for new homeowners is reviewing life insurance coverage.
If you financed your home purchase, you likely now have a significant mortgage obligation. Life insurance can provide financial protection for loved ones if something unexpected happens to you.
For many families, life insurance can:
• Help pay off or reduce mortgage debt
• Allow a surviving spouse or children to remain in the home
• Provide financial stability during a difficult transition
• Help cover household expenses and ongoing obligations
The appropriate amount of coverage depends on your family’s needs, debts, income, and long-term goals. Homeownership often changes those calculations significantly.
This is also a good opportunity to review existing policies. Older policies may no longer provide adequate coverage after taking on a mortgage or additional financial responsibilities. Homeowners should also review beneficiary designations connected to life insurance policies and retirement accounts. Beneficiary designations typically control who receives these assets regardless of what your will says.
Outdated designations can create unintended results, including:
• Assets passing to a former spouse
• Unequal distributions among children
• Delays or confusion for loved ones
A coordinated review of insurance and estate planning documents helps ensure your family is protected and your wishes are carried out properly.
