Where Fitness Meets Fun: Youth Sports at the Mandel JCC

  • May 2026

At the Mandel JCC, Youth Sports is about much more than scoring points. It is about building confidence, learning how to be a good teammate, and feeling part of a supportive community that helps kids grow as both people and athletes. With leagues, clinics, classes, and camps offered throughout the year, children have the chance to explore what they like at their own pace. They might discover a brand new sport, build skills in one they already love, or simply enjoy being active and making new friends. At the JCC, the goal is to participate, grow, and have fun.

Kids have a wide variety of sports to choose from. From soccer to flag football to floor hockey, there is something for every interest and energy level. Basketball begins as early as preschool, where children are introduced to the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, and shooting in a fun, supportive environment. Preschool Basketball is designed to gently prepare kids for the youth basketball program, where they will eventually begin playing games.

In the K–1 basketball division, kids practice once a week and participate in regular season games. This is where they start to apply the skills they learned in preschool in real game situations. In the Grades 2–4 division, players participate in eight regular season games along with weekly practices that continue to build their confidence, understanding of the game, and teamwork. There is also She Got Game, a class created especially for girls ages six and up. In this welcoming setting, girls work on dribbling, passing, shooting, and teamwork while building confidence and a genuine love for the game.

The flag football league is open to kids in grades K–4 and gives them the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of football while playing fun, in-house games with their friends. Floor hockey, one of the newer sports offered, brings exciting, fast-paced action into the gym. There is no ice and no skates, just lots of movement, friendly competition, and a chance to try something different.

At Camp Shalom, Sports Camp is a great option for kids who love being active, have lots of energy, and show interest in a variety of sports. One day kids might be on the basketball court practicing their shot with friends. Another day they are on the soccer field celebrating the first goal they have ever scored. Campers get to play basketball, football, soccer, floor hockey, pickleball, volleyball, and more throughout the summer. Pickleball quickly becomes a favorite because it is simple to learn and instantly fun to play. Sports Camp is especially great for kids with big energy who love fast action and friendly competition.

Something special happens when kids are given so many opportunities to try different activities. Some discover a sport they never expected to like. Others find a new level of confidence in a sport they already know. The variety keeps things fresh and exciting and gives every child the chance to feel successful in their own way. It is not about choosing the “right” sport. It is about giving kids the space to explore, have fun, and look forward to coming back each week to play, move, and be part of something.

When kids play together, they learn more than just the rules of a game. They learn how to encourage a teammate, how to listen, and how to be patient. They learn sportsmanship. They learn how to win and how to lose. These lessons happen naturally through shared experiences, like high fiving a teammate after a great play or offering kind words after a missed shot. An important part of sports is learning how to be a good teammate and showing respect to others.

Most of the time, kids do not even realize they are exercising. They are too busy running through relays, laughing during games, and jumping into challenges with their friends. Sports are a great way for kids to stay engaged and energized. When movement feels this enjoyable, kids begin to look forward to being active. That is how healthy habits start to form in a way that feels natural and lasting.
