Scared to Date?
By Kelly Leary, M.S. & Miranda Capparelli
“Before you marry a person, you should first make them use a computer with slow Internet to see who they really are.” —Will Ferrell
Happy Halloween, friends! October is known for haunted houses, scary movies, and playful costumes. But this season should be about pumpkin spice, cozy nights, and snuggling up next to your favorite person. Instead, a “Black Mirror” lifestyle seems to be taking over, with fictional Hollywood horrors like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees feeling almost tame compared to what’s happening in the world of online dating. Every year, more true stories of dating nightmares, deception, and frightening realities flood our screens and streaming channels. And trust us, it takes a lot to shock us!
Does your dating life feel like an episode of Black Mirror?
We would love to have a cute article about carving pumpkins, but it is our duty as matchmakers to save you or someone you know from the horror behind the screens in your hands. We will first share with you the risks of online dating, followed by the solution. FEAR NOT, the matchmakers have arrived!
First, a heartfelt thank you to our vast community of loyal readers and welcome to our newbies! We ask you all to share this information with someone you know who needs to hear this, and if you are single, take this as your sign to step it up. The holidays are coming right at you so… don’t blink.
Scammers, Liars, and Catfish: Oh My!
So why is online dating so spooky? In 2026, this question may seem obvious, but every day we hear true stories of online dating horrors that our clients have witnessed or heard about through a friend. IT IS UNDENIABLE. Online dating is a nightmare waiting to happen. You may think you have a sea of options and the process moves rapidly—but who cares if you are putting your wellbeing, finances, and family at risk? Online Dating Horrors are no longer just about outdated photos or AI chatbots.
Factually, hundreds of thousands of people have been threatened, stalked, harassed, or much worse by someone they met online.
October is for scary movies, so let’s get real. Let’s watch some true stories. Consider it research and development. Netflix and other streaming services have given us quite the lineup. All of these are real-life online dating/digital age horror movies and series. Watch these, and you may never look at a dating profile the same way again. Taken? You may find yourself jumping into your partner’s arms and saying, “Thank goodness we have each other!” We appreciate you and want you to enjoy this month and all it has to offer.
